How Often Do Seniors Need an Eye Exam?
Once you’ve reached age 60, you need to have your eyes examined at least once a year. This way, we can keep your prescription up to date and monitor your eye health; watching for any indications of disease.

Eye Disease Detection
Here are just a few of the diseases we are looking for when conducting an eye exam.
As your eye ages, the proteins in the lens of your eye start to restructure. As they do, the lens slowly becomes increasingly cloudy. This is called a cataract, and as it develops, it restricts more and more light from reaching your retina, limiting your vision.
Cataracts can be resolved with a relatively simple surgery.
Glaucoma is a disease that causes damage to the optic nerve and is usually associated with intraocular pressure (IOP). The optic nerve is responsible for sending messages from the eyes to the brain. Damage from glaucoma is usually slow and cumulative; resulting in slow but steady permanent vision loss. In most cases, glaucoma does not present any symptoms aside from the slow vision loss. As a result, by the time a patient notices something is wrong, they have already lost a large portion of their vision.

The macula is the small central area of your retina which is responsible for your central vision. Sometimes, blood, irregular blood vessels, or fatty deposits called drusen can collect around the macula, causing “blind spots” or shadows. This condition is called age-related macular degeneration or AMD.

Vision loss due to AMD is permanent and irreversible, however, it can be prevented or delayed if the disease is caught early. Since it does not usually create any noticeable symptoms in the early stages, the best way to detect AMD is through regular eye exams.

The inside of your eye is filled with a fluid called the vitreous. As you age, the vitreous changes from a gel to more of a liquid. As this change takes place, the vitreous tends to retreat or shrink away from the retina (often causing flashes and floaters). This process is normal and typically not vision threatening, however, in some cases the pulling of the vitreous can cause the retina to detach. Retinal detachment can be vision threatening without treatment.
In checking the health of your retina and macula, we’ll also look for any indication of vitreous detachment and any potential threat of retinal detachment.
